By holding the right mouse button while charging a spell, you will be able to quickly adjust your spell&#8217;s properties, which can\u00a0drastically\u00a0increase\u00a0its power. Time slows down while shaping so that you can plan how to best craft\u00a0a spell for each situation. A capable magician using this system will have deadly customization available with every cast.<\/p>\n<p>A gif is worth a thousand words: see it in action!<\/p>\n<div class=\"gfyitem\" data-title=\"false\" data-autoplay=\"true\" data-controls=\"false\" data-expand=\"false\" data-id=\"GoodnaturedWindingGangesdolphin\"><\/div>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<div class=\"gfyitem\" data-title=\"false\" data-autoplay=\"true\" data-controls=\"false\" data-expand=\"false\" data-id=\"AdorableSeveralCooter\"><\/div>\n<h2>AI Performance<\/h2>\n<p>Greg worked on performance improvements within\u00a0landscapes (something fancy with tessellations&#8230;Chip isn&#8217;t really sure what. Greg might not be, either.).\u00a0 He also worked on AI improvements\u2014most notably, the AI no longer forms a conga line when pursuing the Fictorum.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/fictorum.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/12\/AIFanninout.gif\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-197\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-197\" src=\"https:\/\/fictorum.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/12\/AIFanninout.gif\" alt=\"Improved AI performance within the action RPG Fictorum\" width=\"500\" height=\"284\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<h2>Animation Improvements<\/h2>\n<p>Having realistic-looking spell-casting animations is almost as important as the spells themselves. Chip worked on improving these\u00a0for the Fictorum. In the below gif, you&#8217;ll see different animations for three unique\u00a0spells\u2014note how our main character moves differently when casting each.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/fictorum.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/12\/CastingAnimations.gif\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-211\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-211\" src=\"https:\/\/fictorum.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/12\/CastingAnimations.gif\" alt=\"Improved spell-casting animations within the action RPG Fictorum\" width=\"500\" height=\"343\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<h2>Destruction Performance Enhancements<\/h2>\n<p>Due to the large amount of destructible parts used within the buildings and fortifications of our levels, we began seeing\u00a0a massive hit to <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Frame_rate\" target=\"_blank\">frame rate<\/a> and destructible performance\u00a0once we tried making larger towns. Chip and Greg worked together to solve the issue, ultimately\u00a0giving\u00a0players larger levels that perform better.<\/p>\n<p>The below screenshot is of the largest town, pre-fix, we could possibly create without running into destruction issues. Even on our fantastic gaming PCs (Greg&#8217;s note: Fantastic may be an overstatement), these levels would run at about 12-15 frames per second (FPS), and even lower\u00a0while buildings were being destroyed. We wouldn&#8217;t want to play a game with performance like that!<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/fictorum.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/12\/FictorumSnowLevel.png\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-208\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-208\" src=\"https:\/\/fictorum.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/12\/FictorumSnowLevel.png\" alt=\"Snowy castle within the action RPG Fictorum\" width=\"500\" height=\"246\" srcset=\"https:\/\/fictorum.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/12\/FictorumSnowLevel.png 1207w, https:\/\/fictorum.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/12\/FictorumSnowLevel-300x148.png 300w, https:\/\/fictorum.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/12\/FictorumSnowLevel-768x379.png 768w, https:\/\/fictorum.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/12\/FictorumSnowLevel-1024x505.png 1024w, https:\/\/fictorum.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/12\/FictorumSnowLevel-600x296.png 600w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 500px) 100vw, 500px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>After our changes, the destruction issue is resolved and the above level runs at 30+ FPS with the same settings! We even added in additional houses in the outskirts of the castle and it still runs like a dream, even while blowing up buildings.
